Leviticus 5 — Thoughts

Were You Unaware of This?

“Unwitting.” “Unaware.” “Unintentional.”

Sin can be all these things.

That’s why it’s so hopeless for us to try to earn our own salvation. Even if we thought we were living a completely holy life, we could be wrong.

Which can make God seem kind of harsh at first. Why is He so strict? Why can’t He at least cut us slack for sin we don’t even KNOW about?

It’s because He wants better than that for us. He wants to have a complete relationship with us, and we can’t have a complete relationship with a Holy God if there’s any amount of sin left in our lives — even sin we aren’t aware of.

And that’s where God’s harshness toward sin becomes His generosity toward us. Jesus also died for the sins we aren’t aware of.

God gave Israel these sacrifices for unintentional sins, too, because these sacrifices also pointed to Jesus, the Ultimate Sacrifice.

Jesus was God — so there’s no chance that He had sin in His life He that didn’t know about. He’s the only person who could say with confidence that He had never sinned and be right about it. His righteousness was perfect, and THAT is the righteousness He gives us when we put our faith in Him.

God is strict when it comes to sin. He’s also strict when it comes to saving us from it.
